Edition of 300 numbered copies
For three years, Wei Lansheng followed the workshops of the Pearl River Delta. Lacquerers, luthiers, bookbinders: he photographs the hand at the exact moment the gesture lands, when years of training tighten into a single second of accuracy. Nothing is staged. The light is the light of the workbench, falling and plain; the frame stops at the wrist, where the decision reads. Each plate isolates one trade, then the book brings them together: beneath the variety of materials — wood, lacquer, thread, paper — one shared knowledge, that of held precision. Wei does not look for the picturesque of craft but for its exactness. He pulls focus on the hand as one would pull focus on a thought. Together the images form an inventory of work done well, at a time when these gestures still pass, from one workshop to the next, from one generation to the following.
